Be a Healthy Giver

Guest Post by Dr. Keith Giaquinto, DC

I saw this quote the other day that made me stop and think.  The quote was, “Givers have to set limits because takers don’t have any.”  This quote is what provoked me to write this article plus what I have seen in my chiropractic practice regarding people’s health.   I see a need to bring up people’s awareness about setting healthy boundaries, especially for givers.

It is human nature to want to give, help and support others. Givers like to give their time, energy, service, companionship and expertise.   However, there is a problem, not everyone is a giver.  Some people are takers and that is all they do, is take.  Takers can have narcissistic tendencies and can be energy vampires.  When you are around this type of person for a period of time, you always leave feeling drained and exhausted.  These are the types of relationships you want to dissolve.   It is not worth your time or health to constantly be around people that all they do is take.

Make Yourself a Priority

For a giver or a nurturer, there is a dance that needs to be learn with oneself.  This dance is learning how to give when you feel strong and how to say “no” when you are not.  Givers usually do not know how to set healthy boundaries or tell people no. What I see is that givers give and give and give.  They don’t know how to take care of themselves because to them, “they” are not a priority to take care of.  In their mind, they feel better when they put other people’s needs before their own.  But their body usually tells a different story.  Their body starts to breakdown and their health deteriorates.   I am sure we all know people that are givers.  And what is their health like?  Usually it is poor.

Being a giver is good up to a certain point.  That point is when your health starts to become challenged.  At this point the giver keeps giving and their health keep getting worse and worse.  You and you alone are responsible for your own health and happiness.   The skill is to learn how to manage the times you can give and the times you should say “no.”  There is a time to be selfless and you can give when you are healthy and strong.  Then there are times to be selfish and say no when you feel tired, weak or when your health is suffering.  I know this may sound foreign to some people but, it is okay to be selfish sometimes.  Being selfish and selfless are two sides of the same coin.  Create healthy habits so you can continue to be healthy and strong.   It is okay to put yourself first sometimes, when you need it.  By consistently being healthy and strong you can continue to give as much as you want.  But just know that there is a boundary that exists and know when to put that boundary down.   Your health, happiness and mental sanity will thank you for it.

The Important Habits

The habits I am talking about are doing things to keep you grounded, give you inner peace and being strong in your mind and body.  Habits to create for your mind are things like, meditation, qi gong, tai chi, journaling, yoga and exercising.  Habits for your body are exercising, chiropractic adjustments, stretching, yoga and great nutrition.   Nutrition is dealing with your diet and the quality of food that your consume.  But also, your body’s ability to digest and absorb the nutrition from the food you eat to keep your cells and organs nourished well.  Chiropractic adjustments and digestive enzymes can help support strong digestion.

Habits are simply that, a habit.  Since we are a slave to our habits, you might as well have good ones.  These are not done once or twice a month, not even once a week.  Habits are done several times a week and sometimes daily.  How much critical thinking does it take for you to get up in the morning and really think about putting toothpaste on your toothbrush to brush your teeth?  It is a habit and you don’t have to think about it.  My challenge to you is to think about creating healthy habits for your mind and body that I have mention here and put the same priority on them as you do brushing your teeth.  You wouldn’t go day or a week without brushing your teeth would you?  No, why would you go a day or a week without meditating, journaling, exercising, getting adjusted or eating healthy food?   You are worth it. You deserve it.  By staying strong yourself, you can give as much as you want.  If you are struggling yourself, it will be much harder for you to give.  Take care of you, no one else will.
